RecPals

Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information RecPals collects, how it is used, and who it is shared with.

Information we collect

Account information: your email address, which we use to sign you in, and the name you choose to display to others.

Content you provide: the ratings and reviews you write, the items you save for later, and your list of friends.

We also maintain a shared catalog of books, films, shows, musical artists, podcasts, and other titles that everyone who uses the service can see and rate.

How we use your information

We use your information to operate the service: to sign you in, to show your ratings to your friends, to show you theirs, and to keep track of what you have saved for later.

We do not use anything you write to build a profile of your interests, and there is no recommendation algorithm making use of your data. What you see is chosen by the people you are friends with, not by us.

How we share your information

A rating you post is visible to you and to the friends you have accepted. It is not visible to their friends, to anyone who is not signed in, or to anyone else who uses the service.

Anything you save for later is visible only to you, including to the friend whose recommendation you saved.

Your display name is visible on the same basis as your ratings: to you and to your friends.

We do not sell or rent your information to anyone, and we do not share it for advertising purposes.

Data security

Access to your information is controlled at the database level, so that each request is checked against who is asking before any information is returned. This is not something that can be bypassed by a bug in the application on top of it, and it applies equally regardless of which app or device is making the request.

You must be signed in to access any information at all. There are no public pages and no shareable links.

Cookies and tracking

We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies, third-party analytics, or tracking pixels.

Third parties we work with

We use Supabase to host our database and to manage sign-in, which means your information is stored on their infrastructure.

We use an email delivery provider to send the link you use to sign in, which necessarily sees your email address in order to deliver it.

When you search for something to add, the words you type are sent to one catalogue service so we can offer you matching titles: Open Library for books, The Movie Database for films and television, Apple for podcasts, and MusicBrainz for musical artists. They receive the search text and a request from our server, and nothing that identifies you: not your name, your email address, your account, or anything you have rated or saved.

Cover images are fetched by our server rather than by your browser, so those services never see who is looking at what.

We do not work with any other third party, and none of them are given your information to use for their own purposes.

Data retention and deletion

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. If you would like your account and everything in it deleted, contact us at info@recpals.com and we will remove it. This is currently handled by request rather than by a self-service option in the app.

Changes to this policy

If the way we handle your information changes, we will update this page to reflect it.
